Questions on Justification by Faith

Posted by in Bible & Theology

There are times when I post that I have something to say on which I am pretty well convinced, and my motive in posting is to convince my readers to see things the way I see them. There are other times, however, when I am not so certain on what I believe about some matter or another, and I post looking for input from my readers in order to help me as I seek to develop my beliefs and convictions on a certain issue. There are yet other times when I have a relatively set opinion on a certain issue, yet there are certain lingering questions on which I am hopeful the input of others may help me to think more clearly. This post is of the final category.

I have some thoughts and beliefs regarding what I consider to be the correct answers to all of the following questions. And yet, I recognize that many of those who might answer these questions differently than I do have some pretty good arguments on their side. I want to remain open to learning from others, and to being shown where I am wrong, if indeed I am wrong.

I think blogging is a great forum for teaching one another, especially if we are open and willing to learn from one another. In the comment stream of this post, I want to place myself primarily in the learner’s seat and not the teacher’s seat.

The questions I pose here are all related, from my perspective, to a broader issue, which is that of Christian unity. On Jan. 28, in comment #33 of the comment stream of Chris Johnson’s post entitled So….You Want A New Name! I made some comments and posed some questions to Bart Barber related to the difference between unity and uniformity, and what it means to be “within the fold.” This got me to thinking about who really is, and who is not, within the fold, and some important and difficult questions related to all this.

Now, I may eventually pipe in and give my own opinion on the answers to some of these questions. My post Faith, Works, and Rewards, and the ensuing comment stream, touched on some of these issues, although, perhaps, more indirectly than directly. But, I really want to hear, most of all, from you, how you would answer these questions. I would especially like to hear from representatives of differing sides of these issues, interacting with each other, presenting arguments in favor of your position, and counterarguments answering the positions of others. Who knows? Maybe we all might learn a thing or two.

Here are the questions:

1. Is it necessary to believe in justification by faith to be justified by faith?
2. Is it necessary to believe in justification by faith alone to be justified by faith?
3. Is it possible to believe you could lose your salvation and still be justified by faith?
4. If justification by faith is a sine qua non of our beliefs as Christians, why was it not spelled out in the creeds of the early church? Or was it?
