"We Interupt This Program…."

Posted by in Bible & Theology

Usually one hears these words at the most inopportune time. I am watching one of my few television programs and the local channel will “break in” with a weather report and spend the next forty minutes watching the same weather pattern over and over again. I guess that is important; somebody, somewhere is feeling the weather. Or something is going on the world – some country is invading another, or somebody that the world believes is important has died or has done something foolish.

This has been my world the last few days. Stress, interruptions, further stress. World events are not very favorable either – a fact that I am reminded of every time I go by and put gas in my car. Alas, everything around me, including me, is just a mess. When will there be an end?

Perhaps you are feeling the same today. I know I have no personal words of comfort for you. All I can say is my regularly scheduled continuation of my thoughts on Church and State will just have to hold till next time. My recent days have been filled with ministry, school preparation, and family activities, so much so that I have not had the energy to publish my continued thesis. As I sit here and write this my mind is just meandering a dullness that only comes with exhaustion.

When I find myself like this, I can only turn to the Word of God for strength. My favorite Psalm is Psalm 91 – but my Psalm for exhaustion is Psalm 46 (ESV). I reprint it here to remind all of us that we are nothing – God is everything – He is in control – and we are to trust and rely on Him. God bless and have a great day and remember – Be still!

God Is Our Fortress

To the choirmaster. Of the Sons of Korah. According to Alamoth. A Song.

46:1 God is our refuge and strength,
a very present help in trouble.
2 Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way,
though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea,
3 though its waters roar and foam,
though the mountains tremble at its swelling. Selah

4 There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,
the holy habitation of the Most High.
5 God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved;
God will help her when morning dawns.
6 The nations rage, the kingdoms totter;
he utters his voice, the earth melts.
7 The Lord of hosts is with us;
the God of Jacob is our fortress. Selah

8 Come, behold the works of the Lord,
how he has brought desolations on the earth.
9 He makes wars cease to the end of the earth;
he breaks the bow and shatters the spear;
he burns the chariots with fire.
10 “Be still, and know that I am God.
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth!”

11 The Lord of hosts is with us;
the God of Jacob is our fortress. Selah
