Quotable – Mark Twain

“A united Church… makes a mighty power, the mightiest conceivable, and then when it by and by gets into selfish hands, as it is always bound to do, it means death to human liberty, and paralysis to human thought.”
Mark Twain, A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court

Compare and contrast with Mark Twain:
I appeal to you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another so that there may be no divisions among you and that you may be perfectly united in mind and thought. 1 Cor 1:10-13
And for extra credit:
My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me.I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one: I in them and you in me. May they be brought to complete unity to let the world know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me. John 17:20-23
Wouldnt it be great if all the denominatios would put aside their errors in theology and join with us in holding to sound doctrine? I would shout halelujah if the Methodists would agree to immerse converts, and would believe in “once saved, always saved.” That would be incredible! I would rejoice if the Presbyterians would quit baptising babies, and if the liberal Presbyterians would come back to the Bible. I would gladly welcome the Charismatic Churches if they would also believe “once saved, always saved,” and quit speaking in ecstatic utterances. Wouldnt that be wonderful?
But, for some reason they want to be divisive and hold to these unsound doctrines. I mean, why do they want to be so divisive? I just cant understand it. If they would just believe the truth, then we could be joined together in true unity and be the powerful force that Mark Twain talks about.

I’m having a hard time figuring out if I’m supposed to see tags around your post or not.
oops, I was asking if should be seeing sarcasm tags – I forgot that if I made them look like real sarcasm tags, the browser would intrepret them, and, since they aren’t real HTML tags, just drop them out.
