Convention Report # 2

Monday morning at the Pastor’s Conference was all about “brokenness”.  Once again the entire morning was intended to peak with a time of invitation.  Alan Day spoke from Numbers 12:3, “Moses was very humble, more than any man who was on the face of the Earth.”  Dr. Day emphasized that Moses was transitioned through brokenness into humility.  He gave four “pegs”:  1)  Brokenness is essential for real intimacy with God.  2)  Intimacy is essential for hearing God.  3)  Hearing God is essential for leading God’s People.  4)  Brokenness is never an automatic outcome of God’s discipline.  Hayes Wicker used Jacob as an example of brokenness preaching from Genesis 32:24-31.

George Harris spoke from 1 Kings 19:1-4 emphasizing Elijah’s brokenness.  Finally, Ed Litton spoke from Psalm 23 and shared of his own personal experience of brokenness through the loss of his wife in a tragic car accident.  The invitation was a call to step forward to receive whatever experiences of brokenness that God might provide in order to know empowered ministry.  Allen Redpath was quoted a couple of times as saying, “When God has an impossible task, he finds an impossible man, and he crushes him”.  I would say that the atmosphere throughout the conference has been electric (at least where I’m sitting).  At the front, the sounds of weeping and praying, is a wonderful mix along with the sounds of the praise team.

I attended the LifeWay Pastors’ Luncheon and got a free preview copy of Rainer’s new book, Essential Church?.  I was invited to the luncheon to receive an honor deserved by our VBS Director.  It seems that our church (Cornerstone) was selected as a “Top 100″ church for VBS.  This is important since our VBS director’s home was condemned following the recent tornado that hit our city.  I can’t wait to give her the award and to honor her.  We conducted our VBS less than two weeks following the tornado with the result being record attendance.  Last Sunday we held a “Island Service” at the lake and invited all of our VBS families to join us.  The highlight was a baptism service followed by BBQ.  We had a larger than normal crowd and baptized almost 30.  Thanks, Sheila, for making this happen in spite of your loss.

Meanwhile, back to the convention.  I went by the Guidestone booth and picked up my racing number for the 5k tomorrow morning.  I’m assuming that Guidestone sponsors the race in order to promote the need for health insurance following the race.  My teenage sons still don’t think I’ll show up for the race.  I actually trained for a 5k a little over a year ago.  That should do it…

New officers were elected for the 2009 Pastor’s Conference this afternoon:  President–Ed Litton, Vice-President–Bruce Schmidt, and Secretary–James Peoples.
